For hundreds of years, people have eaten the gel from the leaves of the aloe plant for health support. When Clinton Howard, founder of RBC Life Sciences, undertook a scientific study of aloe vera, the true benefits of this plant were revealed to the world.
"Aloe -Your Friend For Life" - Clinton Howard, Ph.D.

Thirty years ago, in 1974 – I heard stories about a tropical plant called “aloe”, the juice of which had amazing benefits.

It had been used by people in warm climates and by early physicians hundreds of years before Hippocrates included it in his medications.

It was taken internally to improve digestion, or applied topically to soothe sunburn, cuts, scrapes, itches, insect bites, or to moisturize dry skin.

It was listed among the medical supplies of explorers like Columbus, and warriors like Alexander The Great who grew his aloe on an Island near East Africa.

Curious about it, I pointed to an aloe plant in a nursery and asked a sales clerk. “What is that plant?”

She answered, “That is the medicine plant!” I asked a pharmacist for an aloe product, but he said there were none on the market.

Now wait!  This didn't’t add up -- Pharmaceutical companies spend billions searching for new drugs.

Here is a known “medicine plant”.

It was clear that any benefits of aloe vera should be determined and made available to the public and to healthcare professionals.

Someone needed to conduct a scientific study of the chemistry, safety, and efficacy of aloe, have it approved, introduce it to the market, and make it available to those who need it.

The most comprehensive scientific study of aloe vera ever conducted. Why had drug companies not done this?

The reason was that they cannot patent natural plants.

Pharmaceutical companies want to create unique synthetic drugs that they can patent and sell protected from competitors.

I decided to take aloe out of the realm of folk medicine.

I founded Carrington Laboratories, built a research laboratory and recruited a team of five scientists.

We began the most comprehensive scientific study of aloe vera ever conducted.

Four years and more than twenty million dollars later, we knew how to grow, process, and stabilize aloe.

We demonstrated its safety and biological activity in humans and animals, and we discovered its most active ingredients.

What did we learn about aloe?

First we learned that the large thick aloe leaf has two useful parts:

  1. A yellow sap just beneath the skin that was used as a laxative, and
  2. The melon-like fillet that contains aloe gel used topically or cut into small portions and eaten as a health supplement.

We removed the skin by hand with a knife. Having no interest in the laxative effect, we washed off all yellow sap, leaving only a clean fillet.

Note: don’t be dissuaded by those who confuse the two parts and think that all aloe vera is a laxative.
RBC aloe is not.

Secondly we learned that aloe gel has many ingredients.

The most active is a long chain sugar (polysaccharide).

However, the benefits associated with the extract are not caused directly by the extract, but by the immune system when it is exposed to the extract.

Third, we learned that the aloe extract stimulates the reproduction of fibroblast cells by approximately 300%.

These are early-stage cells that form and repair connective tissue. The aloe gel was approved as a hydrogel applied to skin wounds.

On the basis of its immune-system activity, the polysaccharide extract, was approved by the US government to treat fibro sarcoma tumors in small animals.

It was also approved to enhance the immune response to virus vaccines for poultry.

These uses led to professional products sold by Carrington through clinics, hospitals and veterinarians. RBC does not sell this extract.

Fourth, we learned how to process gel from the aloe leaf to retain its fresh activity and to stabilize it as a product with a long shelf life. Our process at RBC does not use chemicals, filters, or thickening agents.

RBC Life Sciences:

  1. fillets the leaf by hand and removes the skin,
  2. washes away the outer yellow sap,
  3. grinds the water colored filet to a pulpy liquid gel,
  4. stabilizes it so that it will have a long shelf life
  5. adds the other ingredients according to its intended use

Unlike others, RBC does not use the whole leaf process.

It adulterates aloe gel with chemicals, yellow sap, and leaf fibers, and it must be filtered, removing long chain polysaccharides.

No chemicals that break down polysaccharides are added. RBC lotions do not have pulp but are ground fine to a liquid state. Tru-Aloe drink has some natural pulp.

Our fifth finding was that aloe is a workhorse.  It is not magic.

For maximum benefit, you need to use a product that contains a high amount of quality aloe gel and use it frequently.

In the years that followed aloe became a popular product. After retiring from Carrington, I tested aloe products in stores that contained only 5 or 10% aloe. One of the most popular had less than 1% aloe!

Seeing a need to make higher quality aloe products available to the public, I founded RBC Life Sciences in 1991 and worked with Dr. Jerry Lee Phelps on the formulation of a new line.

Today we provide high quality aloe vera gel in maximum amounts including:
